First-Time Leader Course Introduction

As a new manager, making the change from an individual contributor to a first-time leader brings a new set of challenges and demands. Two obstacles that most experience are:

1) Realizing you can no longer do all the work yourself, and will need to depend on your team; and

2) Understanding that a large part of your role is to develop your team and enable them to be successful (versus focusing on your individual achievements)

The skills that helped move you into a leadership role, while valuable, may no longer be what is needed from you to be a successful leader.

This course aims to prepare you for a role as a Senior Manager, where you lead a team with multiple members by highlighting key skills and ways to improve. In this course we’ll learn about the importance of:

● understanding how to make the shift to deliver results through a team effort, versus an individual contributor

● learning the interpersonal skills to work effectively with your team, leadership and colleagues

● developing, empowering and growing your team

● becoming a strategic leader for your organization


Interactive Nature of this Course

The purpose of this course is not just to communicate concepts, but also to facilitate your use of them. To help you, at various points throughout the course, we will suggest exercises to assist you in applying the concepts. When you see a downloadable worksheet, you'll know that you're at one of those points. We encourage you to create a dedicated workbook, or journal, to record your responses. Let's get started!

Dear Learner,

Congratulations on deciding to invest in yourself, to becoming a better leader! We’re excited that you’re joining TEAMES Global in our full First Time Leader course. TEAMES Global is the training arm of our parent company, the management consulting firm TEAMES & CO*.

Frankly, we created this training because we’ve worked with many organizations that either do not have training for new leaders, or whose training does not address the key needs of new leaders.

Then, when we looked to the market for resources that we could refer to our clients, we couldn’t find training materials that fit the bill. Courses and trainings were either prohibitively expensive or lacked key content and tools that we feel are vital to equip leaders to succeed.

Given this, we decided to create unique and accessible courses based on the frameworks, content, and materials we use to support our clients. We do this in a digestible format and at prices that are accessible to broader audiences, a combination we did not find in the market.

In this training, we combine organizational strategy practices with traditional leadership practices to create a truly unique training course for new leaders. We aim to create training that is truly equipping for new leaders, skips the “fluffy” principles that bog down many corporate trainings, and helps you and your team put your learnings to work right away!

We use lots of examples, have created downloadable worksheets (which we expect you to download and use with your leaders and teams), and have included the best practices that we’ve developed over years of client work.

As we work through the tools in this training, we’ll challenge you to take a customer-centric view, to engage in intentional self-reflection, and to practice leading your team (and developing your leadership) to become more effective.
